Various methods of optical staining subjects of photomicrography are described. Discussed are colored darkfield (Rheinberg) illumination for photomicrography, and techniques for improvising filters for Rheinberg illuminations. The principle of Rheinberg illumination can also be utilized with phase contrast microscopes; details for such adaptations are given. Use of polarization with compensators is described. Also discussed are Nomarski and Jamin-Lebedeff interference contrast techniques. -- AATA
