Abstract
A preliminary report about the restoration of the winged altarpiece from 1479 in the cathedral of Århus by the Lübeck master Bernt Notke. Under the overpaintings it appeared that thepaint layer on the panels and the polychrome wooden sculptures were in an astonishingly good state of preservation, whereas there was a lot of damage in the more decorative parts of the altar. This together with the fact that the altar still serves its liturgical function were the arguments for the complete restoration of the altar. See AATA 19-511.
