During the last 15 years four large scale objects from the end of the 15th century have been restored in Germany. Before the restoration of the Holy Blood Altar (attributed to Tilman Riemenschneider) in St. Jacob's Church in Rothenburg, it was assumed to be carved in the raw wood without any form of coating; treatment revealed that it appeared to be covered by an original monochrome glaze in order to cover the differences in the surface of the wood. On The Herlin Altar in the same church the panels have been restored several times, but not the polychrome figures and the decorative parts. From The Anunciation of Viet Stoss in the St. Lorenz Church in Nuremberg a number of overpaintings were removed, which originated because this big figure group, which hangs freely in the choir, fell down in 1817 and was severely damaged. On the Calvary Group of Bernt Notke in the cathedral at Lübeck all the overpaintings were removed, but the paint layer was so damaged that a restoration was not attempted.
