Besides the old lime-wash painting, several other systems from 19th century to the present are considered such as silicates, cement, silicons and various organic binders. Physical criteria like the saturation with and evaporation of water according to the equation of Künzel are reviewed. Optical criteria of lime, and reflection, and the protective role of paints for wall and plaster are discussed.
