Abstract
This publication is the final report of the International Symposium on the Conservation of Large Objects of Waterlogged Wood which was held in Amsterdam on September 24-28, 1979. The subjects covered in the contributions include shipwrecks, post-medieval ship archaeology, the use of polyethylene glycol in the treatment of waterlogged wood, the suitability of gamma radiation polymerization for the treatment of large waterlogged wooden artifacts, ethics and aesthetics in relation to the conservation and restoration of waterlogged wooden shipwrecks, and case studies of the Bremen Cog, the Mombasa Hull, and the V.O.C. Ship Amsterdam. An appendix presents the recommendations formulated by the participants at the symposium, and a bibliography covers related literature published between 1946 and 1979.
