A water repellant, penetrant and light duty lubricant/protectant, LPS1, is recommended for the daily cleaning and care of firearms. Soaking the firearm for periods from one hour to several days is said to loosen handling dirt and deposits of ancient and modern explosives. Its use at Chatham Historic Dockyard on an 18-century iron cannon from a seawall below spring tide level is described: LPS1 was applied by brush or spray and the cannon was successfully cleaned to bright metal which showed turning marks and features of casting.
