The cooperation between the sculptors Juan Bautista Vazquez, the Old Man, and Jeronimo Hernandez with the painter Antonio Mohedano created a masterpiece of the Spanish mannerism. With regard to polychromy, it shows a very rich technical and ornamental repertory, thus following the last third of the 16th century’s style. The Spanish Renaissance tradition meets in these traveling masters coming from Avila, in Castilla, where they worked before moving to Andalucia and having previously lived in Toledo. The role of both artists in introducing Italian mannerist innovations in Andalucia was tremendously far-reaching. The work by the IPHE in the conservation of the Lucena tetabule allows us the rare opportunity to study it in cooperation with a multidisciplinary professional team. The data contained in the preserved documents have been compared with the results of the laboratory tests; the gilding and polychromy were analyzed.
