The Walters Art Museum has in its collection works by three generations of the same Florentine workshop – Lorenzo di Bicci, Bicci di Lorenzo and Neri di Bicci. A detailed visual examination of these and numerous other works in both Italy and America was carried out by the author to compare the materials and techniques of the artists, exploring the influence father had on son. The paintings were examined in reflected and infra-red light, under magnification and through x-radiography. Panel preparation, incision work, gold work and painting technique were compared, revealing subtle changes as the workshop progressed through the generations. This study showed that although this family is rightfully considered very traditional in style, there were definite developments in technique that led to more efficient and economical workshop production. -- SCMRE
