Abstract
The Dutch painters Frans Post and Albert Eckhout worked in Brazil between 1637 and 1644. Eckhout’s Brazilian paintings have been compared with three paintings by Post, one painted while Post was in Brazil and two after his return to Europe. Technical analysis indicates a strong similarity between one group of Eckhout’s paintings and the single painting by Post that is known to originate in Brazil. This suggests that Post and Eckhout either shared materials and a workshop or that their materials were commonly prepared. It indicates also that Eckhout’s portraits could have been painted in Brazil, something held in doubt earlier. -- SCMRE
