Abstract
High-level information technology is starting to move forward in this new century and high expectations are not in short supply. To realize its potential, there have been many trials to build governments, libraries, museums, archives and so forth in electronic and digital form. In the midst of these trends, Hitachi, Ltd. has developed the Digital Image System (DIS) that involves high-quality image processing of artworks and transforms the digital data into multipurpose applications such as visual presentation, digital restoration, etc. In this paper, the DIS technology and its applications will be discussed through our projects on various great treasures, including rare books, maps, Japanese and fresco paintings, and photographs. -- SCMRE
