Infrared spectra of degummed ramie fibers in untreated and alkali treated conditions at room temperature were observed over a varying frequency range using the potassium bromide disk technique. A sharp change in the spectrum due to transition from cellulose I to cellulose II was observed in a twelve to fifteen percent concentration range of alkali. The transition was accompanied by a crimp in the fiber. -- AATA
