In recent years conservators have become increasingly concerned about the dangers inherent in oxidative bleaching of cellulosic fibers. Oxidizing agents have a good ability to remove stains from artifacts and the brightness gained is excellent. However, this is usually at the expense of fairly significant oxidation of the fibers. Consideration of these problems has led to an interest in using reducing agent bleaches in the cleaning of paper and textile artifacts.
