Abstract
This is an extensive seminar paper done for the restoration section of the Hochschule fuür Bildende Kuünste, Dresden. The author presents methods used internationally for restoring and conserving leather wall hangings including: climate control, light control, pest control, mold control, pH control, removal of undesirable backing material, cleaning, removing unwanted fats and oils, softening, control of fat and moisture content, consolidation, backing, consolidation of the paint surface, surface cleaning, mending and patching, retouching, coating, rehanging, storage. This is followed by a detailed report on the history, condition and treatment of the leather wall hangings in the Damenbildnis room in Moritzburg Castle, near Dresden. Appended are methods of analysis, mathematical formulae, recipes, and a list of products.
