Abstract
The use of basic aluminum sulfamate as an aluminum tanning agent, a substitute for chrome or an auxiliary for chrome tanning were investigated in terms of the content of fixed aluminum and chrome in hide powder. When hide powder was pretanned with a chrome agent and then retanned with basic aluminum chloride or basic aluminum sulfamate, the content of aluminum fixed was lower than that in hide powder tanned with aluminum alone. However, when hide powder was retanned with basic aluminum sulfate, the content of aluminum fixed was higher than that of hide powder tanned with aluminum sulfate alone. The binding behavior of basic aluminum sulfamate to collagen was similar to that of basic aluminum chloride. Aluminum tanning prior to chrome tanning presented a 2-3 fold higher value of fixed chrome content than single chrome tannage presented. When aluminum sulfamate was added to chrome tanning bath, the content of chrome fixed in hide powder was higher than that of single chrome tanned hide powder.
