The discovery in 1987 of a perfectly preserved 17th-or 18th-century antipersonnel projectile bag may prove the most significant discovery made thus far in East Carolina University's conservation lab. The iron shot sewn into a canvas bag may well be one of the earliest intact examples of this type of shot in North America. The antipersonnel shot was removed from the bore of a seemingly insignificant 2.5 inch 5 cwt. iron gun undergoing routine treatment in the conservation lab. The paper covers the recovery and conservation of the gun and shot. Cannon typolgy of the 17th and 18th centuries is discussed in an effort to identify the nationality and age of the cannon and the possible significance of its discovery.
