Large collections of fossil bones are often found in a very friable state and unless consolidated could easily crumble. They are sometimes also required in the block form for research and display purposes. The authors describe the use of shellac and alcohol to first consolidate the surface layers. This is followed by cutting corridors around the block and the whole reinforced with tissue paper/plaster/plaster bandage coatings. A method of lifting and turning the block is then described, followed by completion of the reinforcement coatings for transportation to the laboratory. Blocks of 450 kg have been consolidated and raised by this method. -- AATA
