The chemiluminescence of organic compounds in solution is briefly surveyed with some emphasis on the mechanisms which result in relatively efficient population of an excited state of a product molecule. This is done in terms of the relation [phi] = [phi]C x [phi]E x [phi]F with particular reference to peroxide compositions.
