Shipp, president of 20th Century Plastics, Inc., Los Angeles, California, writes in rebuttal to Ed Scully's article (Ed Scully on color, <i>Modern Photography, Vol. 41, No. 8, pp. 47-48, 154 155 (August 1977); AATA 14-676) which suggested that poly(vinyl chloride) film storage pagesbe avoided for reasons that they could damage the photo materials. He states that his firm has conducted exhaustive research and development to produce protective storage materials for photographic materials. Shipp provides a test report from a national testing laboratory concerning his firm's products. In the editor's response to Shipp, he states that Scully's article was based on specific reference material, articles by recognized experts in the field, and seminars on storage and preservation of photographic materials which he attended. Various quoted statements, say, among other things, that PVC gives off hydrogen chloride in breakdown during aging. The testing laboratory, in answer to a query, reported no HCl from the PVC in their tests. A search by <i>Modern Photography yielded not one report of damage to film, slides or prints by PVC. -- AATA
