Abstract
Several systems are in existence for the rehabilitation of deteriorated wood by replacing the missing parts with an epoxy resin and reinforcing the decomposed material with high tensile inserts. In a two-year program the author tested the performance of such systems. The following tests were carried out: 1. Strength of adhesion between wood, epoxy and steel at room temperature and at elevated temperatures. 2. Structural strength of wood, reinforced with epoxy and different inserts, at room temperature and at elevated temperatures. 3. Effect of preservatives on epoxy. 4. Behavior of the system at rapid temperature changes. (Freeze-thaw cycles). 5. Behavior of the system in fire. The parameters which were developed during the tests may be applied to the engineering design of epoxy reinforced wood structural members.
