Abstract
Detergents are defined and lists given of necessary surface activity effects that must be produced by a detergent in cleaning. The article is illustrated by numerous drawings and schematic formulae. Soaps are defined and their strengths and weaknesses discussed. The synthetic detergents of Syndets are classified and differences in these explained. Two cases illustrating how to choose a detergent for a special use are provided.
