This paper, originally presented at the annual meeting of the American Association of Museums in St. Louis, Missouri, May 1964, describes the program of the center in training students on a graduate level for professional practice ain art conservation. The center which started in 1960-1961 has an enrollment restricted to twelve full-time students, no more than three students per year. In addition to completing the requirements for the master's degree in art history, each student is required to take courses in the materials, structure and technology of works of art, studying organic and inorganic materials in alternating years. Each student constructs a variety of works of art, using traditional materials and methods; examines and treats objects in all categories from easel paintings and drawings to metals, ceramics, glass and fresco. At the end of two years he has acquired an understanding of the causes and mechanisms of deterioration, current and past methods of preservation and restoration, and has had a limited experience in treatment. The two final years are devoted to concentrated practice and research in a selected field of specialization, including a full-time internship of at least seven months with an established master. The center has also undertaken research which will improve understanding of deterioration as well as methods of conservation. Although it is not a service organization, if a work of art owned by a museum has specific application in the teaching or research programs, the center will examine it, perform analyses and give it conservation treatment. A nominal charge to cover costs is normally made. The article concludes with a list of faculty, staff and Board of Consulting Fellows, together with pertinent facts about grants and budget needs.
