The conservation and restoration of the figurehead statue, Themistoklis, dating from the 19th century in the National Historical Museum, Athens, Greece, are reported. The deterioration of this polychrome wooden statue is attributed to 1) prolonged exposure to sun and sea, 2) wood-destroying insects, 3) fluctuation in relative humidity, and 4) corroding iron nails. Conservation included the removal of successive layers of overpainting, removal of the nails, and the filling of missing areas with polyurethane resin. The wood underwent a preventive insecticidal treatment. -- AATA
