Cotton fibres were swollen in a zinc chloride/potassium iodide solution and examined by light microscopy. The features observed in the primary and secondary cell walls were used to study the damage caused by mechanical stress, sodium hypochlorite bleaching and alkali treatment. The results were used to assess the maturity and tensile strength of the fibers. -- AATA
