The standardization of tool forms deprives archaeologists of the functional clues which are offered by the far wider range of flint tool-forms. It is therefore difficult to decide for what particular task or tasks a formally identical group of obsidian blades was used, unless the edges of the tools are examined at higher magnification, so as to reveal characteristic patterns of microwear.
