Abstract
This article describes a procedure used by the Archives of Traditional Music, Maxwell Hall 057, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana 47405 USA to repair broken wax phonograph cylinders. The gaps where pieces are missing are grooved so that the cylinders are playable. When played, the cylinders revolve at an average rate of 100-180 rotations per minute, and the patch of new wax is rarely detectible. These techniques represent only two of the developments concerning wax cylinders that the project team has produced in its first six months of existence. Specific questions concerning further details of the repair or restoration of cylinders, ar any aspect of this project may be addressed to the Archives cylinder project.
