Abstract
In ancient Laurion, the Athenians developed a special waterproofing mortar for use in cisterns and washer plants. The role of the washer plant in the metallurgical process enabled ore with lead under 20 percent concentration to be brought up to a usable level; the construction of a washer plant was studied: the inner layer of mortar and the special hydraulic plaster were analyzed. The original method of preparing and applying the plaster was determined through x-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. -- AATA
