Abstract
The effects of acid rain on stone monuments are summarized. The basic chemistry of acid rain and its interaction with calcite (CaCO* l3*s) based on stone, marble and limestone, is presented. Factors affecting calcite dissolution, the problems of calcium sulfate (gypsum) formation and subsequent discoloration, and mechanical damage from soluble salts are also introduced.
