Tears were mended with brass dressmaking pins, clear shellac and cloth patches. The robe was cleaned by rolling white cornmeal dampened with carbon tetrachloride over the skin. To hasten the process the moistened meal may be heated in an oven and when warm worked on the surface of the skin. About eighty pounds of white corn meal and two gallons of carbon tetrachloride were used. A ballpoint pen with brown ink was used to restore colored line drawings. The procedure also works well with buckskin objects.
