For the restoration of old <irushi</i>, it is suitable to apply the same handiworked <i>kurome-urushi</i> as that which old craftsmen used. The way to obtain <i>tegurome-urushi</i> from raw <irushi</i> is to stir <irushi</i> with a spatula in a vessel open to air. Samples of 10-100 grams of <irushi</i> were weighed during the process of making <i>kurome-urushi</i> (water content 6-8%) from raw <irushi</i> (water content 20-26%). The weight of <irushi</i> decreased almost linearly to the stirring time during periods of both ordinary (20-30°C) and higher (35-40°C) temperatures. The decrease of weight of <irushi</i> was caused by loss of water in <irushi</i>. Consequently, oxygen in the air did not affect the weight of <irushi</i> under work even though it played a role in darkening the color and increasing the viscosity of <irushi</i>. At the final stage, an appropriate quantity of water was added to <i>kurome-urushi</i> and stirring was continued until a satisfactory result was determined by the turbidity test. <i>Kurome-urushi</i> obtained with this process had a high viscosity and its dried film had very good luster and clarity.
