The following three factors are involved in the yellowing of garments in storage during the winter months: the atmosphere in warehouses, and sometimes within make-up units themselves, often contain pollutants; the presence of certain chemicals on the fabric, or trims; and certain types of packaging materials that absorb pollutants. The finished condition of the fabric is important. Fabric that has been washed and left in an alkaline condition is much more prone to reaction than one left in a slightly acid condition. Precautions taken by garment makers, fabric and trims suppliers, packaging suppliers and laundries are outlined.
