Abstract
The development of the circular knitting machine and the latch needle are related to historic economic and social conditions. The impetus for these inventions came from the quest for an improved method of mass-producing stockings and socks. Common roots between today's circular hosiery machine and the large-diameter circular knitting machine are discussed.
