The Municipal Museum of Bergen op Zoom was flooded twice because of broken water piping. The Leather and Shoe Museum at Waalwijk suffered from the same calamity. The cause of the trouble was the same, all three times. Due to insufficient thermal insulation the piping for the fire-hoses got frozen in nights of extreme low temperature. As a consequence, by the increase in volume of the frozen water, the pipe burst and when thaw set in the water ran freely into the building, unnoticed until the first employee arrived. The second event in the Municipal Museum occurred on a place which had been difficult to reach with the insulation materials (and was not treated!), after the first flooding. The frost did not have any problems with access... Insulation measures taken in the Leather and Shoe Museum after the flood, not only led to greater safety but also to a reduction of almost 50per thousand in energy consumption.
