A program of research is underway at the University of Aberdeen with the overall aim of investigating the application of optical holography for subsea inspection in the offshore industry. Discussed are some of the problems associated with taking holograms underwater and presented are results from the authors' investigation into the effect of seawater as a disturbing medium on the holographic image. This method should also be applicable to recovery of artifacts submerged in the ocean or in similar environments. -- AATA
