Abstract
Analysis of the compositional features of a group of papers dating from 1637-1900 was conducted by Winterthur Analytical Laboratory. Studies by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence was used to analyze for trace elements either chemically combined in the fiber or deposited in the paper during manufacture. Other studies demonstrated the feasibility of identifying elements subsequently added by printing or painting processes. This report also includes analysis procedures, origin of the elements found, and a discussion of results.
