Archaeological excavations in Belize in Central America have pushed back the origins of the Maya to 2500 B.C. The buildings and pottery uncovered clearly foreshadow the splendor the Classic Maya period. Maya architecture of the early formative period consisted of plaster covered earth platforms that were the foundations for timbered superstructures. The platform was built directly on an old soil surface that included burned wood suitable for carbon14 analysis.
