Abstract
The traditional arrangement by which museum laboratories or private restorers offer conservation treatment on a services-available basis to small historical societies and libraries in their region does not meet the needs today. A cooperative regional laboratory in which a group of museums share the fiscal responsibility is one answer to the problem. A regional conservation center such as that at the Maine State Museum in Augusta has outfitted a mobile unit to take conservation services to local museums and historical societies throughout the state. Similar agencies which can provide conservation services in a certain geographical area are being established.
