After characterizing devices for examination and analysis and differentiating between non-destructive and destructive sampling techniques, the author provides a very useful index of all the analytical procedures available to the conservator from low power microscopy to Isotope mass spectrometry. A coding system is suggested to define sample type and size, type of data sought, application and availability of analytical instrumentation.
