Cleopatra's Needle, an outdoor granite obelisk in London, England, was cleaned in 1949. The history of its previous preservation treatments as well as its cleaning in 1949 are given. Its condition and treatment are compared to an obelisk in New York, New York. Solvents used include Lissapol N and carbon tetrachloride, and benzene mixed with Lissapol N. Paraffin wax was used as a preservative. -- AATA
