This article describes the technique and history of pâte-de-verre glass which has existed since early antiquity. The glass is made by grinding glass crystals, to which lead has been added, into a powder. The powder, together with metal oxides for color, is mixed into a paste using a binder, which usually consists of sodium silicate in water. The paste is applied to a mold in thin layers, which is then fired, destroying the mold. -- AATA
