Abstract
A gilt-silver disc with a bitumen backing, attributed to Iran of the 14-13th centuries B.C., was studied, using scanning electron microscopy with secondary electron, backscaltered electron, and x-ray emission detection. The conclusion was that gilding was done by burnishing on gold leaf followed by a brief period of heating.
