Abstract
This pioneering work is the first attempt to give historic perspective to the development of crocheting. The author has taught and explored the technique for many years. When she could find no published historical information in Danish Museums or libraries, she continued her search in Norway, Sweden, Finland, England, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Italy. Based on the evidence of the collections visited, it would appear that crocheting is about 200 years old. The book is in 4 parts: 1) Origin and development of crochet from a thermatical point of view 2) Chronological review of the origin and evolution of crochet in Europe; 3) Techniques; 4) Crochet patterns from old crochet books and women's magazines. Pages 347-367 comprise a comprehensive list of the content of all captions in English. Part 3 is translated in full. (Abstractor's note: The illustrations are very well chosen and provide a truly comprehensive overview as an aid to cataloguing crochet collections.)
