Abstract
The paper presents the open-bath method for safe solvent cleanings and reports on the design and operation of the prototype solvent-cleaning unit, commissioned by the Textile Conservation Department of the North West Museums and Art Gallery Service, and installed at its Blackburn (Lancashire) headquaters in 1986.
