The application of thin-layer chromatography and flame ionization detection is examined relative to the qualitative and quantitative measurement of lipids in wool. The Iatroscan system determines the composition of the solvent-soluble, internal lipids isolated from wool after Soxhlet extraction with a chloroform/methanol azeotrope. The effect of scouring on the composition of these lipids is investigated.
