In the mid-1920s and early 30s, a group of fragments dating from the 8th to 12th centuries were excavated at a site near Rayy, south of Tehran in Iran. These Medieval Islamic textiles often referred to as “the Buyid silks,” entered collections in Iran, Europe and North America. Additional pieces found their way into collections as textiles appeared on the market in the early 1940s. In 1947 doubts arose regarding the authenticity of some of the fragments and lead to discussions among curators, art historians and dealers. Though the open debate has subsided, the accurate dating of many Buyid fragments has yet to be ascertained. The Textile Museum owns a group of textiles attributed to this site; many with deserving reservations about their authenticity. In order to shed further light on this collection, a systematic and comparative compilation of information from The Textile Museum’s “Buyid” silks was initiated, including: date of acquisition, dealer’s name, notes on similar pieces in other collections, fiber and weave identification, and previous analyses such as carbon dating. This paper presents a brief history of The Textile Museum’s Buyid silks as well as a report on various projects investing the origins of these silks.
