In 2004, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art acquired a double-niche, central Anatolian village carpet with an early 17th century attribution. Almost immediately its authenticity was questioned and the carpet was labeled an 18th or 19th century reproduction. Consisting of a knotted wool pile on a wool foundation, the carpet measures approximately 8.2 feet (2.5 meters) by 5.25 feet (1.6 meters) and at first glance appears largely intact though not without areas of mending and repair. In this paper, the authors present the results of their chemical and physical analysis of the carpet using ultraviolet reflectance and fluorescence photography, ultraviolet and visible spectrometry, x-radiography, and radiocarbon dating. Findings from weave and dye analysis are presented. Particular attention is given to the utility of radiocarbon dating for establishing the authenticity of carpets with questionable provenance.
