Abstract
A significant difficulty in the documentation of cleaning processes of paintings is the overall recording of non-original layers deposited on the surface. When these layers are removed, the information concerning their stratigraphic configuration disappears. Archaeological stratigraphy offers a new standpoint to the problem of cleaning, its aims and limits. This discipline also offers new methods to record both the configuration of the deposits and the cleaning process.
