The author proposes an extension of Sir Hilary Jenkinson's (1939) definition of an archival document to include three-dimensional objects, as follows: There are three classes of archives: 1) Documents and artifacts drawn up or used in the course of an administrative or executive transaction of which they formed a part; 2) Machine-readable records which arise from an informational or decision-making process; and 3) Artifacts and objects used in the manufacturing process or which form the product of such a process. The argument is supported by examples chosen from various industries of the use of manufactured products as archival records. -- AATA
