Abstract
Mounting systems for mural paintings, detached tiles and mosaics have normally been made from materials such as cement and plaster. The resultant mounted objects are heavy and difficult to handle. The use of a foaming epoxy resin to produce a lightweight backing system has been investigated. Tests for stability and strength have been carried out and the foaming epoxy resin has been used in the British Museum to mount a series of tiles. The authors report the results of these tests and describe the method of use of the material.
