A limited number of polymer preparations was investigated for their possible use as an adhesive for leather, within the scope of the rules that should govern sound restoration activities. Regarding bonding strength as well as water-vapor permeability, suppleness and reversibility, a PVA preparation, a methylhydroxypropyl-derivative of cellulose, tapioca starch, and gelatin were selected. Experiments to follow should indicate whether accelerated ageing of glued leather, at both elevated temperature and relative humidity, and in an acid-forming atmosphere, will make necessary a further selection of the present adhesives or the consideration of new ones.
