Abstract
Air movement using wall-mounted oscillating fans may be one of the most useful and least expensive methods for cooling to provide a comfortable indoor climate in residential buildings, and it can reduce energy consumption in hot and humid climate. In residential buildings of Korea, temperature control for cooling has been normally achieved by split-type air conditioners, and also the air speed could be increased by using together with wall-mounted fans or ceiling fans. This paper aims to evaluate the thermal comfort criteria including local thermal discomfort and skin temperature changes in various transient cooling operations by using the split-type air conditioner and wall-mounted oscillating fan. A separate 8 subject tests were carried out in a building room in Cheongju, South Korea. Four subjects, 3 male and 1 female, participated in these experiments. Subjects were exposed to the cooling conditions with split-type air conditioner and wall-mounted fan. In results, there were different thermal conditions of human body according to the various cooling operation. With the increase of air speed, the average skin temperatures gradually were on the decrease up to 30°C. Due to the direction of fan, there were some discomforts of partial body parts such as forehead and bare arms. Also we can notice the eye irritation due to the continuous air flow near the face (eye).
